Frequently asked questions

. Do I need to be Buddhist to benefit from this book?

Not at all. This book is written for everyone, regardless of religious background. The wisdom in Tibetan Buddhism, compassion, mindfulness, understanding suffering, applies to any life. Many readers are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or non religious and still find these teachings helpful.

Both. Tibetan Buddhism includes religious practices like prayer, meditation, and rituals. But it’s also a complete philosophy for understanding reality, consciousness, and human behavior. You can engage with the philosophical aspects without adopting the religious elements.

Karma means action in Sanskrit. It refers to the consequences of our actions. Physical, verbal, and mental. Karma isn’t cosmic revenge or reward. It’s cause and effect. If you act with kindness, you create positive conditions in your life. If you act with anger or greed, you create negative conditions. Karma is always changing, and you have the power to change it.

It’s complicated. Tibetan Buddhism doesn’t center on a creator God like Christianity or Islam. However, it recognizes deities, enlightened beings who guide practitioners. The Dharmakaya, often translated as emptiness or the life force of the universe, is the ultimate reality that pervades everything. Some Westerners compare it to God, though it’s not a personal deity.

Enlightenment is the permanent end of suffering. It’s the state of complete wisdom and compassion, where you’re free from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. Enlightened beings, Buddhas, no longer create karma and can choose where and how they reincarnate to help others.

Yes. Tibetan Buddhism teaches that every being has the potential for enlightenment. It may take one lifetime or many lifetimes, depending on your practice and karma. Vajrayana Buddhism, the Tibetan tradition, offers methods for achieving enlightenment in a single lifetime.

For serious practice, yes. Tibetan Buddhism is passed down through unbroken lineages from teacher to student. A qualified teacher ensures you’re practicing correctly and guides you through each stage. However, you can still read books, meditate, and apply Buddhist principles to your life without a formal teacher.

There are three main branches of Buddhism. Theravada in Southeast Asia focuses on individual enlightenment through renouncing the ego. Mahayana in China and Japan emphasizes realizing that reality is an illusion and helping all beings reach enlightenment. Vajrayana in Tibet includes Mahayana teachings plus tantric practices that work with subtle energy, chakras and channels. It’s considered the fastest path to enlightenment.

Google Tibetan Buddhist Centers in your state. Look for centers associated with a qualified Lama and a mother monastery. Avoid centers without clear teacher affiliations. Charlene recommends Palyul centers, which offer in person and Zoom classes. Contact info@palyulohio.org or call (330) 659-0468.

If you want to go deeper, consider The Tibetan Book of the Dead, The Way of the Bodhisattva by Shantideva, The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh, and Introduction to Tantra by Lama Yeshe. However, working with a qualified teacher is more important than reading many books.

Charlene spent a lifetime learning these teachings. 40 years of study, practice, and ordination as a Ngakpa. She wrote this book after teaching at George Mason University, where students responded enthusiastically to her clear explanations. The book itself took about two years to complete.
